420 Snacks for Stoners

Homage or Coincidence?

Last week, I was watching an Alien movie marathon (Alien, Aliens, and Alien3 - Fox Movie Channel opted against playing Alien Resurrection and the AvP movies) and was struck by this shot at the beginning of Alien3 (1992, director David Fincher’s 1st movie).

It reminded me of this still from Bride of Frankenstein (1935, dir. James Whale), which is in one of my favorite childhood books, Classics of the Horror Film, by William K. Everson.

Is that shot in A3 intended as an reference to Bride? I checked wikipedia, I googled, I even Netflixed A3 for the commentary, but no dice. It’s such a brief part in the cemetery sequence of Bride that I guess it’s just a coincidence, but a very striking one.

…was learning Monty Python trivia while watching it.

Fairly early on in W., the title character is at home in Texas, watching some old Robin Hood show on television. I recognized the tune of its theme song from a sketch and did a little googling. It turns out that the tv show is The Adventures of Robin Hood, a British program which aired in the U.S. in the 1950s, and its theme song is indeed the basis of the song in Monty Python’s Dennis Moore sketches.

New Word: Fubarfreude

There are times when I become obsessed with something because I delight in its crappiness. It seems as though there should be a loanword from German or perhaps French which describes this feeling, but I couldn’t find one, so I invented one:

FUBARFREUDE

The German word for “awful” is furchtbar, which is similar to FUBAR (Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition). And since schadenfreude is the pleasure one takes in the misery of others (Schaden = harm, damage + Freude = joy), fubarfreude means the pleasure one takes in the lameness of others, particularly when the others’ are oblivious to that lameness.

Mike: I just bought “The Happening” on DVD!
Jen: Why? That movie sucked!
Mike: Fubarfreude, dude. I can’t help it!

I wrote this video for my old Maude Team, The President. It was a weekly and monthly staff pick on Funny or Die and got so many hits on UCBComedy.com that the server broke, justifying the purchase of more servers (or so I’ve been told).
